A clear repair process starts with a clear description of the work. California’s Bureau of Automotive Repair explains consumer protections covering estimates, authorization and final invoices. This guide summarizes key points and describes our planned approach.
Read the estimate before authorizing.
BAR says consumers are entitled to an estimate showing expected parts and labor charges before repairs begin. Diagnostic or teardown work can involve a charge even if you decide not to proceed with the repair. Ask what the initial scope includes and what happens if further investigation is needed.
Know what you are approving.
Confirm the vehicle, reported concern, proposed work, parts and expected charges. Our planned process will use a written estimate and documented customer authorization. An inquiry, phone call or discussion of a symptom does not by itself authorize a repair.
Additional work needs additional approval.
If inspection reveals another problem, understand the proposed change and its cost before approving it. BAR explains that a repair business must contact you and obtain authorization for additional repairs. Keep a record of the revised scope and approval.
Keep the final records.
- Retain the estimate and documentation of authorization.
- Keep the final invoice describing the work and parts supplied.
- Save related warranty information and service records.
- If you want replaced parts returned, discuss that before authorizing repairs; applicable exceptions may affect availability.
Verify the business independently.
Check current registration with California DCA. BAR registration does not establish that every specialty service, worksite or business is ready to accept your particular job.
The Black Hand Automotive LLC remains pre-launch. Paid estimates, repairs, appointments, customer intake, deposits and payments are not open.
